Dance Schedule 3/8/16 to 3/14/16

Mar 7th , 2016

Hi Everyone,

We’ve had a chilly weekend.  Last I saw in the forecast was a spring week, at least for part of it.  Yahoo!  Have you seen some spring flowers blooming in your area?

If I know something is canceled, I’ll have it noted.  If I haven’t heard, I’ll assume it is ON.  The classes that meet in schools are almost always closed if school is closed, so check the news for that information for the county in which your event is held.

I’ll update on Facebook for most changes to the schedule.  Often I update this online version to reflect changes to events. Occasionally there will be an additional email beyond the regular weekly one.

We are now in the season of mostly indoor activities.  Make one of those activities dancing.

Speaking of changes to schedules; please be aware of the bad weather policy for the events you attend.  That white stuff is likely to show up again to screw up schedules.

If you have information about an event that I need to update, please send it to me LBLOYER@YAHOO.COM or Lbloyer@verizon.net or lbloyer@friendsofcountrydance.net

Try to find time to dance, whatever the weather or your schedule.

There is a good article in the Stanford Dance Newsletter about how dancing is the best activity to keep Alzheimer's and Dementia away. http://socialdance.stanford.edu/syllabi/smarter.htm takes you to the full article.  It’s a good one for all of us to read.

********************

Enjoy your family and friends while you have them.  Hugs are always good.

***********************

REMINDER:  Those of us who dance at various restaurants or clubs need to remember that one of the goals the business has in having dancers there is to increase sales of drinks or food or both.  The landscape is littered with clubs that either do not exist anymore or places that welcomed dancers for a while & then ended the dancing.  This has been a big issue for country bars, etc. for many years.  Remember that if you want to have those places to dance, that the owners aren't in business to provide you with entertainment for free.

*****************

Welcome to the new readers.  Thank you for all the information you send to me.  Thank you also to the others from whose newsletters I freely borrow information about many of the events listed here.

Does anyone have anything to report?

'Country by the Bay' on Saturday, 2/13 had an even bigger crowd than the one last month.  There were 190+ dancers there & I think everyone had a great time.  Dance floor etiquette was good, especially for the size of the crowd and the number of relative rookies.  The Valentine’s decorations and roses for the ladies were much appreciated.   We always have lots of fun. Bring your honey or friends (or come alone and make new friends) & join us Saturday, 3/12 for the next dance.  It is likely to be a big one as well, if history is any indication.  The band will be 'Southern Winds'.  Dancers, it's definitely worth the drive. The band will play from 8pm – 11:30pm. Linda & Rich will be teaching a line dance at 7pm & a couples' lesson at 7:30pm Come out & join the party!  The $15 cover includes dance lessons, draft beer, soda, & snacks, as well as 4 hours of open dancing.  The hardwood floor is the biggest in the area and easy on the feet and legs.  I am taking ALL of the table reservations by email LBLOYER@YAHOO.COM.  I need to have the reservations to me by midday on dance day.  Reservations must be claimed by 7:30PM.  We're looking forward to seeing all of the dancing friends, as well as making some new friends.  Dances are on 2nd Saturdays.

Nick's in Alexandria is still THE place to learn to dance. There are lessons 5 nights a week: Couples' (still ONLY $5) on Tuesday & Friday (with Linda & Rich) & Thursday (WCS with Tim) ($5), Line on Tuesday (free with Kayla), Friday ($5 with Renae) & Saturday ($5 with Brittny), plus the non-country swing dance lessons on Wednesdays with Dabe & Janelle of Gotta Swing.  Come on out & learn some new dance moves!  Check the listings below for the particulars. There is live country music every Friday & Saturday, & occasionally Tuesdays.  Come early and have dinner.  There is also an occasional swing band on Wednesdays (next swing band night, 3/16 “Matt Kelly & Ian Walters”).  Upcoming event(s):

NVCWDA will be at some different locations for the next couple of months.   The times also will vary depending on location and the availability of the hall. The next regular dance will be March 19 at Accotink UU Church in Burke, VA with 6:00 start time for review.  The atmosphere is friendly with no smoking and no alcohol. Children are welcome as well. Snack food is provided by people attending the dances (so you're welcome to bring something to share).  The dances are held on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays.  Check NVCWDA.org for the info on the next dance, as well as other association information.  Please check the info below for the location and time of each dance.

Dance lessons are offered through the Parks & Recreation agencies in several counties. Most are series that run for several weeks and require pre-registration.  Check the Parks & Recreation information for your county online or in publications.  I have some listed, but could never manage to keep up with all of them in the jurisdictions that this newsletter covers.

A. Calvert Co.(MD) at Mt. Hope Com. Ctr. on Tuesdays & Thursdays with Terrie Pirkey (line & couples).  Check the website: www.co.cal.md.us/residents/parks/arts/ for information and registration;  You can also call Mt. Hope Com.Ctr. at 410-257-6770.

D. King George County, VA at King George Citizens Center,

E. Manassas Park Community Center - registration through their website.

F. There are also a number of classes at various senior centers and senior centers without walls.  If you are 55+ and there's a center in your area, check that out.  The classes I list below are either on hiatus or relocated for the next few months. Check http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/ncs/news/ni2015/lincolnia_senior_center_renovations.htm for schedules and locations.  The renovations are taking longer than expected at Lincolnia & may not be finished until June.

Other senior dances: at Lee Community & Senior Center  and Arlington Mill Sr. Ctr.

I have a few of these listed, but there are many more.

For Fairfax community and senior center activities, check this calendar page http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/ncs/calendar.htm.  There are far more dance classes than I can list here.  If you are interested, check the calendar.  There are country, line, ballroom, Latin, etc.

The Boot Scooters Dance Team from Southern MD has lessons in a few places.  There is dancing on Wednesdays at the Hotel Charles (with Free beginner line dance lessons), Dancercise on Mondays at All Faiths Episcopal Church with old and new dances; $5pp.

For those readers located in the western counties, there is indeed some country dancing.  The Hagerstown Country Western Dance Association would LOVE to have you join them.  They hold dances on 2nd & 4th Saturdays in Maugansville. Email tdavis2058@yahoo.com for more information.  Single guys......They would really like you to come visit as there are LOTS of ladies there who dance.  I’m also hearing more from central PA.  If you’re interested in these, please let me know & I’ll do some tracking on that info.

If you need directions to any of the places listed, check the listing of the event or check the web address or email in each item or look on the calendar page for the map.  If all of that fails, let me know.  I do have directions to some of the locations & know how to find some of the others.
