Hi Everyone,
Oh My! Where did January go? I guess winter will be back soon, but a few nice days in February are always such a gift.
Please check with your favorite event/sponsor/club for up-to-date schedule information. I don’t generally do midweek updates by email, but I will if needed. I do update the listings below and post on Facebook sometimes.
If you travel out of town and find something interesting, let me know & I’ll pass along the info or put it in the Links page for other dance friends who may travel.
*There are some dances and lesson nights out there that need some more people to keep going and a few new ones that need your support to get going. You can’t very well complain that there’s no dancing in your area if you haven’t gone out & supported what’s there now. Don’t wait until it’s too late!
*Please be aware of the bad weather policy for the events you attend. ‘Tis the season when there might be frozen stuff. I receive notice of some cancellations for weather events, but I’m sure not all of them. IF your favorite events send out cancellations, it’s best to get on their lists. Hopefully, there won’t be any more need of this for many months, but cancellations occur for other reasons too.
*If you have information about an event that I need to update, or you want to subscribe to the email updates, please send it to me LBLOYER@YAHOO.COM or lbloyer@friendsofcountrydance.net
*Try to find time to dance, whatever the weather or your schedule.
*There is a good article in the Stanford Dance Newsletter about how dancing is the best activity to keep Alzheimer's and Dementia away. http://socialdance.stanford.edu/syllabi/smarter.htm takes you to the full article. It’s a good one for all of us to read.
*There was also a good video on Facebook a while ago that was giving some of the same advice.
* Bottom line….dancing is GOOD for you!
********************
Enjoy your family and friends while you have them. Hugs are always good. We never know how long they’ll be with us.
REMINDER: Those of us who dance at various restaurants or clubs need to remember that the ONLY GOAL the business has in having dancers there is to INCREASE SALES of drinks or food or both. The landscape is littered with clubs that either do not exist anymore or places that welcomed dancers for a while & then ended the dancing. This has been a big issue for country bars, for many years. Remember that if you want to have those places to dance, that the owners aren't in business to provide you with entertainment for free. DO NOT ASSUME that a good-sized crowd makes a bar/restaurant/club successful. Don’t expect others to foot the bill for your good time.
Welcome to the new readers.
Thank you to those of you who send info for what you send to me. If you have info on something I should list or change, please send to me.
******* 'Country by the Bay' on Saturday, 1/11 had a great crowd. It was lots of fun! We had many dancers who were newbies to this dance! We are always happy to have MANY of our VA friends continue to join the group. It’s always a fun dance. There are so many new dancers coming. It’s good to know that new people are learning to dance. Dance floor etiquette is good, considering the large crowds we often have. Bring your honey or friends (or come alone and make new friends) & join us Saturday, 2/8 for the next dance. Hopefully it will be a big one. The band will be 'Southern Winds'. Dancers, it's definitely worth the drive. The band will play from 8pm – 11:30pm. Linda & Rich will be teaching a line dance at 7pm & a couples' lesson at 7:30pm (check listing under Saturday for details). Come out & join the party! The $15 cover includes dance lessons, draft beer, soda, & snacks, as well as 3.5 hours of open dancing. The hardwood floor is the biggest in the area and easy on the feet and legs. I am taking ALL of the table reservations by email LBLOYER@YAHOO.COM. I need to have the reservations to me by midday on dance day. Reservations must be claimed by 7:30PM. We're looking forward to seeing all of the dancing friends, as well as making some new friends. Dances are on 2nd Saturdays.
******Nick's in Alexandria is still THE place to learn to dance. There are lessons 5 nights a week: Couples' on Tuesday & Friday with Linda & Rich (sometimes Patti & Brian, or Steve, or Guy or Wesley, or maybe Michael), Thursday WCS with Tim, Line dance on Tuesday with Laura or Laurie, Friday with Renae & Saturday with Brittny or Marsha or Laurie, plus the non-country swing dance lessons on Wednesdays with Dabe & Janelle of Gotta Swing. Come on out & learn some new dance moves! Check the listings below for the particulars. There is live country music every Friday & Saturday, & occasionally Tuesdays or swing music occasionally on Wednesdays. Come early and have dinner. Next events:
*******Northern Virginia Country Western Dance Association (NVCWDA) will be at Lincolnia Senior Center all the rest of this year (except NYE). Regular dance times are early. Lessons start at 6pm & dancing ends at 9:30pm. The next dance will be on 2/15 at Accotink UU Church, in Burke, VA, starting at 6:00pm with lessons, followed by open dancing at 7pm. The atmosphere is friendly with no smoking or alcohol. Children are welcome as well as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult. Snack food is provided by people attending the dances (so you're welcome to bring something to share). The dances are held on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays. Check NVCWDA.org for the info on the next dance, as well as other association information. Please check the info below for the location and time of each dance. The new dance floor at Lincolnia is great! Also, there is lots of room to dance. Also, the NVCWDA has a demo team (2 divisions) performing occasionally in the area. The demo team performed at Celebrate Fairfax on Sunday, 6/10/18 and on Sunday, 6/9/19. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTbeORyLqdU&feature=youtu.be We danced and taught at Greenspring Retirement Community and performed at Waltonwood Retirement Community. Videos are posted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VT-Z8YfLtvE&feature=youtu.be, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIHeD7AuJcM&feature=youtu.be, and https://youtu.be/n0UO1Yun9JU Our team also performed in the rain at Celebrate Fairfax on 6/9/19 https://youtu.be/UTbeORyLqdU. We had people performing in the Senior Olympics at Lincolnia on 9/18 and some at National Dance Day in Fairfax on 9/21. There was also a performance/teaching event at Little River UCC Church in Annandale on 10/12 and another at Landsdowne Woods of VA on 11/17. There are some other videos on YouTube taken by Bill Wong. Some of the links for these can be found on the NVCWDA website http://www.nvcwda.org/ There is also a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/NVCWDA/
******Dance lessons are offered through the Parks & Recreation agencies in several counties. Most are series that run for several weeks and require pre-registration. Check the Parks & Recreation information for your county online or in publications. I have some listed, but could never manage to keep up with all of them in the jurisdictions that this newsletter covers. In addition, classes are added and removed as the sessions change. There are also classes in some senior centers around the area as well.
****** For Fairfax community and senior center activities, check this calendar page http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/ncs/calendar.htm. There are far more dance classes than I can list here or keep up with. If you are interested, check the calendar. There are country, line, ballroom, Latin, etc.
*****I’m also hearing more from central PA/NJ, etc. If you’re interested in these, you can check https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=country%20dancers%27%2C%20bands%27%20events%20pa%2C%20md%2Cand%20surrounding%20areas This is listed as a closed group, but I’m sure I can likely give you the info you’d need to join.
If you need directions to any of the places listed, check the listing of the event or check the web address or email in each item or look on the calendar page for the map. If all of that fails, let me know. I do have directions to some of the locations & know how to find some of the others.
