Dance News 6/19/18 - 6/25/18

Jun 18th , 2018

Hi Everyone,

Wow, a weekend without rain!  Warm to hot, yes, wet, no.  Summer has arrived, complete with heat, humidity, & thunderstorms.  Be safe out there!

I don’t do midweek updates by email. I update the listings below and post on Facebook.

If you travel out of town and find something interesting, let me know & I’ll pass along the info or put it in the Links page for other dance friends who may travel.

*There are some dances and lesson nights out there that need some more people to keep going.  Don’t complain that there’s no dancing in your area if you haven’t gone out & supported what’s there now.   Don’t wait until it’s too late!

* There are some new dance opportunities out there.

*Please be aware of the bad weather policy for the events you attend.   I receive notice of some cancellations for  weather events, but I’m sure not all of them. IF your favorite events send out cancellations, it’s best to get on their lists.

*If you have information about an event that I need to update, please send it to me LBLOYER@YAHOO.COM

*Try to find time to dance, whatever the weather or your schedule.

*There is a good article in the Stanford Dance Newsletter about how dancing is the best activity to keep Alzheimer's and Dementia away. http://socialdance.stanford.edu/syllabi/smarter.htm takes you to the full article.  It’s a good one for all of us to read.

*There was also a good video on Facebook recently that was giving some of the same advice.

* Bottom line….dancing is GOOD for you!

********************

Enjoy your family and friends while you have them.  Hugs are always good.  We never know how long they’ll be with us.

Speaking of enjoying those close to you while you have them.  Ron Harris is in rehab following his stroke in February.  Patti is posting on CaringBridge.  If you need a link, you can contact her, or let me know.

***********************

REMINDER:  Those of us who dance at various restaurants or clubs need to remember that the ONLY GOAL the business has in having dancers there is to INCREASE SALES of drinks or food or both.  The landscape is littered with clubs that either do not exist anymore or places that welcomed dancers for a while & then ended the dancing.  This has been a big issue for country bars, for many years.  Remember that if you want to have those places to dance, that the owners aren't in business to provide you with entertainment for free.  DO NOT ASSUME that a good-sized crowd makes a bar/restaurant/club successful.  Don’t expect others to foot the bill for your good time.

*****************

Welcome to the new readers.  Thank you for all the information you send to me.  Thank you also to the others from whose newsletters I freely borrow information about many of the events listed here.

******* 'Country by the Bay' on Saturday, 6/9 had a nice crowd & was lots of fun!  The crowd included some dancers who were newbies to this dance!  We were happy to have many of our VA friends continue to join the group.  It’s always a fun dance.  There are so many new dancers coming.  It’s good to know that new people are learning to dance.  Dance floor etiquette was good, considering the large crowd.  Bring your honey or friends (or come alone and make new friends) & join us Saturday, 7/14 for the next dance.  Hopefully it will be a big one.  The band will be 'Southern Winds'.  Dancers, it's definitely worth the drive. The band will play from 8pm – 11:30pm. Linda & Rich will be teaching a line dance at 7pm & a couples' lesson at 7:30pm (check listing under Saturday for details). Come out & join the party!  The $15 cover includes dance lessons, draft beer, soda, & snacks, as well as 3.5 hours of open dancing.  The hardwood floor is the biggest in the area and easy on the feet and legs.  I am taking ALL of the table reservations by email LBLOYER@YAHOO.COM.  I need to have the reservations to me by midday on dance day.  Reservations must be claimed by 7:30PM.  We're looking forward to seeing all of the dancing friends, as well as making some new friends.  Dances are on 2nd Saturdays.

******Nick's in Alexandria is still THE place to learn to dance. There are lessons 5 nights a week: Couples' on Tuesday & Friday with Linda & Rich and sometimes Patti & Brian, or Steve, & Thursday WCS with Tim. Line dance on Tuesday with Becca, Friday with Brittny & Saturday with Brittny or Becca, or sometimes Laura on a night she’s needed, plus the non-country swing dance lessons on Wednesdays with Dabe & Janelle of Gotta Swing.  Come on out & learn some new dance moves!  Check the listings below for the particulars. There is live country music every Friday & Saturday, & occasionally Tuesdays or Wednesdays.  Come early and have dinner.  There is also an occasional swing band on Wednesdays.  Upcoming event(s): 7/10 SIX PACK RODEO for Military Appreciation Night.

*******Northern Virginia Country Western Dance Association (NVCWDA) will be at Lincolnia Senior Center most, but not all, of the time for the next year.   Regular dance times are early. Lessons usually start at 6pm & dancing ends at 9:30pm. If the dance is at the church, everything is ½ hour later.  The next regular dance will be on July 7 at Accotink U U Church in Burke. The atmosphere is friendly with no smoking or alcohol. Children are welcome as well as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult. Snack food is provided by people attending the dances (so you're welcome to bring something to share).  The dances are held on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays.  Check NVCWDA.org for the info on the next dance, as well as other association information.  Please check the info below for the location and time of each dance.  The new dance floor at Lincolnia is great!  Also, there is lots of room to dance.  Also, the NVCWDA has a demo team (2 divisions) performing occasionally in the area.  Both teams performed at Fall For Fairfax and some other events.  There are some videos on You Tube  https://youtu.be/LU7I25LWGzA  The team will be back out & about at some events in 2018.  Some members of the Line dance part of our demo team performed on 3/11 at the NBC4 Health Expo at the DC Convention Center. Video posted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UqStKf29bY  The demo team performed at Celebrate Fairfax on Sunday, 6/10 on the Community Stage. It was fun and, fortunately, didn’t rain! Videos are posted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VT-Z8YfLtvE&feature=youtu.be and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIHeD7AuJcM&feature=youtu.be

******Dance lessons are offered through the Parks & Recreation agencies in several counties. Most are series that run for several weeks and require pre-registration.  Check the Parks & Recreation information for your county online or in publications.  I have some listed, but could never manage to keep up with all of them in the jurisdictions that this newsletter covers.  In addition, classes are added and removed as the sessions change.  There are also classes in some senior centers around the area as well.

*****College of So. MD is also offering line dance classes at all 3 campuses taught by Leslie Harvey of the S.MD Boot Scooters.  New classes will be starting in July. Pre-registration is required. You can register online at https://www.csmd.edu/apply-register/ (LaPlata – Mondays, Prince Frederick – Thursdays, Leonardtown – Sundays)

****** For Fairfax community and senior center activities, check this calendar page http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/ncs/calendar.htm.  There are far more dance classes than I can list here.  If you are interested, check the calendar.  There are country, line, ballroom, Latin, etc.

******* For those readers located in the western counties, there is indeed some country dancing.  The Hagerstown Country Western Dance Association would LOVE to have you join them.  They usually hold dances on 2nd & 4th Saturdays in Maugansville. Email tdavis2058@yahoo.com for more information.  They also run a series of Tuesday ngiht lessons in the Fall & Spring.  Single guys......They would really like you to come and visit as there are LOTS of ladies there who dance.

I’m also hearing more from central PA.  If you’re interested in these, you can check https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=country%20dancers%27%2C%20bands%27%20events%20pa%2C%20md%2Cand%20surrounding%20areas  This is listed as a closed group, but I’m sure I can likely give you the info you’d need to join.

******The Southern Maryland Boot Scooters are raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association with a few activities.  Their 2nd Annual Benefit Dance is scheduled for Saturday, August 25.  Details for that are in “Looking Ahead” below the regular listings.

********The new owners of Cancun Cantina are planning to keep the country going on weekends with country bands.  If you are interested in the Country Music continuing, despite what may have occurred recently, please continue to support it at this venue.  It’s one of the few country dance locations left for dancers as well as the bands, so please continue to support it. There will be a change for 1st Thursdays, with something other than Line dancing with Sandy.  As far as I know, the rest of the Thursdays in each month will continue with Sandy as usual.  I have heard that there are some Wednesday changes as well,  but don’t know exactly what’s going on.

If you need directions to any of the places listed, check the listing of the event or check the web address or email in each item or look on the calendar page for the map.  If all of that fails, let me know.  I do have directions to some of the locations & know how to find some of the others.
