Dance Schedule 8/15/17 to 8/21/17

Aug 14th , 2017

Hi Everyone,

The summer weather has been pretty hot and sometimes stormy.  Keep cool and stay safe.

*There are some dances and lesson nights out there that need some more people to keep going.  Don’t complain that there’s no dancing in your area if you haven’t gone out & supported what’s there now.   Don’t wait until it’s too late!

*Please be aware of the bad weather policy for the events you attend.

*If you have information about an event that I need to update, please send it to me LBLOYER@YAHOO.COM

*Try to find time to dance, whatever the weather or your schedule.

*There is a good article in the Stanford Dance Newsletter about how dancing is the best activity to keep Alzheimer's and Dementia away. http://socialdance.stanford.edu/syllabi/smarter.htm takes you to the full article.  It’s a good one for all of us to read.

********************

Enjoy your family and friends while you have them.  Hugs are always good.  We never know how long they’ll be with us.

***********************

REMINDER:  Those of us who dance at various restaurants or clubs need to remember that the ONLY GOAL the business has in having dancers there is to INCREASE SALES of drinks or food or both.  The landscape is littered with clubs that either do not exist anymore or places that welcomed dancers for a while & then ended the dancing.  This has been a big issue for country bars, for many years.  Remember that if you want to have those places to dance, that the owners aren't in business to provide you with entertainment for free.  DO NOT ASSUME that a good-sized crowd makes a bar/restaurant/club successful.  Don’t expect others to foot the bill for your good time.

*****************

Welcome to the new readers.  Thank you for all the information you send to me.  Thank you also to the others from whose newsletters I freely borrow information about many of the events listed here.

*******************

*Please take a look at the vacation to Punta Cana in November.  I will be one of the instructors going.  We’re still signing folks up, but the deadline is approaching quickly.  It promises to be a fun trip to a very nice resort, so why not join us? Last I heard, there were 5 rooms left AND WE NEED ANOTHER SINGLE FEMALE TO SHARE A SUITE.

Does anyone have anything to report?

*****The Southern Maryland Boot Scooters are working to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Walk later this year.  Snowbird@md.metrocast.net  The team is hosting a Benefit Dance on 8/26 at Elks Lodge #2421 in Waldorf, MD.  The dance will be from 6-11pm with all types of music. food, drinks, games and more! Tickets are $10 in advance & $15 at the door.  For info and tickets, contact Leslie.  If you can help out by attending, please contact Leslie.  They also have a fund-raising page http://act.alz.org/site/TR?team_id=383106&fr_id=10429&pg=team for the Walk To End Alzheimers.

******* 'Country by the Bay' on Saturday, 7/8 had a smallish, but fun crowd, with many new dancers as well as many familiar faces. As always it was lots of fun.  There are so many new dancers coming.  It’s good to know that new people are learning to dance.  Dance floor etiquette was good, as usual.  Bring your honey or friends (or come alone and make new friends) & join us Saturday, 9/9 for the next dance.  Hopefully it will be a big one.  The band will be 'Southern Winds'.  Dancers, it's definitely worth the drive. The band will play from 8pm – 11:30pm. Linda & Rich will be teaching a line dance at 7pm & a couples' lesson at 7:30pm Come out & join the party!  The $15 cover includes dance lessons, draft beer, soda, & snacks, as well as 3.5 hours of open dancing.  The hardwood floor is the biggest in the area and easy on the feet and legs.  I am taking ALL of the table reservations by email LBLOYER@YAHOO.COM.  I need to have the reservations to me by midday on dance day.  Reservations must be claimed by 7:30PM.  We're looking forward to seeing all of the dancing friends, as well as making some new friends.  Dances are on 2nd Saturdays.

******Nick's in Alexandria is still THE place to learn to dance. There are lessons 5 nights a week: Couples' on Tuesday & Friday with Linda & Rich & Thursday WCS with Tim. Line dance on Tuesday with Brittny, Friday with Renae & Saturday with Brittny or Becca, and 1st Saturdays with new advanced Line dance lesson, plus the non-country swing dance lessons on Wednesdays with Dabe & Janelle of Gotta Swing.  Come on out & learn some new dance moves!  Check the listings below for the particulars. There is live country music every Friday & Saturday, & occasionally Tuesdays or Wednesdays.  Come early and have dinner.  There is also an occasional swing band on Wednesdays.  Upcoming event(s):

*******Northern Virginia Country Western Dance Association (NVCWDA) will be at Lincolnia Senior Center most, but not all, of the time for the next year.   The times are early. Lessons usually start at 6pm & dancing ends at 9:30pm. If the dance is at the church, everything is ½ hour later.  The next dance will be on August 19 at Lincolnia Sr. Ctr, Alexandria, VA. The atmosphere is friendly with no smoking or alcohol. Children are welcome as well as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult. Snack food is provided by people attending the dances (so you're welcome to bring something to share).  The dances are held on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays.  Check NVCWDA.org for the info on the next dance, as well as other association information.  Please check the info below for the location and time of each dance.  The new dance floor at Lincolnia is great!  Also, there is lots of room to dance.  Also, the NVCWDA has 2 demo teams performing occasionally in the area.  Both teams performed on Sunday, August 6 at the 4-H Fair at Frying Pan Park.

******Dance lessons are offered through the Parks & Recreation agencies in several counties. Most are series that run for several weeks and require pre-registration.  Check the Parks & Recreation information for your county online or in publications.  I have some listed, but could never manage to keep up with all of them in the jurisdictions that this newsletter covers.  In addition, classes are added and removed as the sessions change.  There are also classes in some senior centers around the area as well.

****** For Fairfax community and senior center activities, check this calendar page http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/ncs/calendar.htm.  There are far more dance classes than I can list here.  If you are interested, check the calendar.  There are country, line, ballroom, Latin, etc.

******* For those readers located in the western counties, there is indeed some country dancing.  The Hagerstown Country Western Dance Association would LOVE to have you join them.  They usually hold dances on 2nd & 4th Saturdays in Maugansville. Email tdavis2058@yahoo.com for more information.  They also run a series of Tuesday ngiht lessons in the Fall & Spring.  Single guys......They would really like you to come and visit as there are LOTS of ladies there who dance.  I’m also hearing more from central PA.  If you’re interested in these, you can check https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=country%20dancers%27%2C%20bands%27%20events%20pa%2C%20md%2Cand%20surrounding%20areas  This listed as a closed group, but I’m sure I can likely give you the info you’d need to join.

If you need directions to any of the places listed, check the listing of the event or check the web address or email in each item or look on the calendar page for the map.  If all of that fails, let me know.  I do have directions to some of the locations & know how to find some of the others.
